Buying car in Cancun? Here are a few tips. First, there are a few rules and regulations about vehicles and registration in Mexico which you need to know about as a foreigner.
Vehicle tax
You will be charged a vehicle tax every year when it is time to renew your plates. This tax is fairly high for the first two years on new car, but gets significantly lower as it gets older. This is something to keep in mind when deciding on buying a new or used car. Other factors that increase the tax price is ifcis automatic and has aircondition.
Register a car
When buying a car as a non-Mexican citizen, you keep in mind that you must have an FM3 or FM2 Immigration permit in order to register a car in your name. Without that, no plates.
Used cars in Cancun
On Sundays there is a used car show at the intersection of Coba and Kabah Avenues. Here you'll find locals displaying there used cars and you can simply walk around and look at them in this giant parking lot.
Remember, that you need to be absolutely certain that the vehicle is not stolen or has a lien from a bank.
Drivers licence
Getting a drivers licence can be a hassel for foreigners. You need to have photos, a work permit, an existing licence from home. You will go from different stations with major paperwork that needs to be filled out. You will do a blood test, eye exam etc.
You will only be issued a drivers licence up until the time of expiry of your FM2 or FM3.
